Katniss

Jacie (AKA Tammy the hair-doll) gets to go to "The Hunger Games" tonight! Not that I care, its not like I'm jelly or anything... She was kinda dressing up like Katniss so I quickly braided her hair! Katniss, in the movie, has a diagonal braid across the back of her head. The images I saw were a little more "outtie" than mine is but I think it turned out decent for a 2 minute job...

Can't wait to hear how the movie is! Hopefully I have something to post tomorrow, I'm currently in Coalville on dog sitting duty for my parents. Not much human interaction for me this weekend!

Fishtail

Ya know how fishtail braids seem tre hard to do? Guess what? They aren't! I'll show you...
I split the hair into two halves, thusly

Next I took a section from one side and crossed it over

And then did it to the other side

I continued it all the way down her hair...

Ta-dah!

There you go! I love fishtail braids. They speak to the part of me that sometimes wishes I had long bohemian, hippy hair. (Then it takes me like, a minute to do my hair and I remember why I love my short 'do!) Once I figured them out I was pretty much impressed with my awesome skills. Now you can be too! I mean, with your awesome skills though.

The Not-Knots

Raise your hand if you missed me! I'm back by popular demand Ladies and Gents. I just got done coloring Jacie's hair so I decided to do a couple of styles on her. I stole this style from my co-worker Hannah. I love when she does her hair like this. It looks like she knotted it but its just a little trick-a-roo.

To start, I back-combed her hair at the crown a bit...


She kept moving when I was trying to take this picture so I got angry and said "How dare you move, you are my personal hair doll. Hold still!" to which Jacie replied "OOO, what's my name then?!". We decided on Tammy.
I pulled Tammy's hair up like so and put it in an elastic...


Now here is the trick-a-roo part. I look a piece of hair from the ponytail and wrapped it around the elastic until its hidden and secured it with a bobby pin.

I do this to finish off most of my ponytails, it looks more finished and fancy. I then did another ponytail at the nape of her neck and wrapped the elastic.
(Don't mind Baylee, lookin all creepy in this picture. She's had a rough day..)

Hannah usually does three "knots"down her head. I love it and people always tell her how pretty it looks. Including me. I did another style on "Tammy" and also have pictures of an awesome new service I am going to be offering at the salon. You'll definitely be hearing more from me very soon!

So heres what happened...

This was not the style I intended it to be. I was going to show you how to tie a bow with your hair to pull the sides back. Jacie's layers are too short. So I'm showing you a knot! I told Jace, "I was going to do a bow but your hair is too short." To which she replied, "WHAT?!!"
I realized my mistake then and corrected myself that it was her layers. Jacie is obsessed with her hair being long. She will ask Gooch or I at least once a week if her hair is "looking longer". Any minor trim she complains for DAYS about how short her hair is. For someone who is so concerned about the length of her hair, you'd think she'd use better products. Instead of those vats-o-crap she washes her hair with from Sam's Club. I could get her something MUCH better for the same price, if not cheaper.
Any who, I parted off all of the hair that falls in front of her ears...
You want this style to look a little bit messy and you also need all the pieces of hair to stay together. So I took my trusty ratting comb and teased this whole section. All the way to the ends...

I did this to the other side and then simply tied the strands into a square knot. I stuck a bobby pin in the top and bottom of the knot and I was done!

This isn't exactly ground breaking work I did here. Its just nice to take a blah style and jazz it up a little bit. Simple things don't have to look simple. As always, my opinions always come free of charge! Your welcome.

Lexie's Flight Attendant 'do

I colored my friend, Lexie's hair today! Its been a very very long time since we have had a chance to do it and her hair was looking sad. Being a flight attendant and us living in two separate cities creates a scheduling problem. Lexie has been my friend for a long time and has been my client since I was in school. She is my little guinea pig! One time I gave her an accidental rat tail, I've given her hot-roots( big NC), and some traumatic bangs. Lex is the best! Whenever we do her hair, whether its at the salon or my moms kitchen, we always bicker. About everything. Her hair, men, our mutual friends, you name it. Its funny and I wish we saw more of each other!
As I said, she is a flight attendant so she always needs hairstyles she can do herself that are "compliant" with the rules (p.s.-if you've ever seen the rule of compliance for a flight attendant, you'd shit. Its a ca-razy stack of papers about 3 inches thick). So after some meditation, I came up with this. Sorry for the bad photography, the lighting was bad and dark hair doesn't show detail as well as light hair.

The products I used...

After we rinsed out her color I sprayed her hair with Soy Tri-wheat leave in conditioner and some Soy Renewal by Sexy Hair. Then I blow dried it with a round brush. I teased her hair at the crown a little. I don't tease it too much, especially because Lexie doesn't her hair too big. One of the many things we bicker about. I took her hair in LARGE sections, sprayed them with a little Spray and Play by Big and Sexy, then curled them. Lexie has fine hair so I did her whole head in a about 8 curls. You might need to do it in more if your hair is any thicker than hers.

Next I sectioned her hair off into three sections. I parted the hair from the top of the ear on both sides like so...

Then I put the back section in a loose ponytail and push my fingers into the space between the ponytail holder and her head, as seen here:

Grab the hair in the ponytail and pull it through with your fingers. Congrats, you've just created a topsy-tail! Take small sections of the pony tail and put them in a bobby pin...

Push this in above the ponytail, allowing the curly ends to hang out.

Your probably wondering what the pieces in the front are doing and now I will tell you! You can do lots of things here, a braid, loops or (what I did) a twist! Grab one section and split in in two, twist them together, and pin the end in with the rest of the curls. Now repeat on the other side. Set it with some hairspray and you are now ready to deal with rude air-travelers!

I have no picture of the front because Lexie wouldn't sign my waiver. Something about no makeup. Boo.

I know, I'm kind of awesome...

I totally just made this little hair do up! Unless you're reading this thinking, "I've seen this before. Your stupid." In which case, cram it and let me have my moment.
So, I was working at my Aunt's salon in Coalville today and Brooke came in to have her hair colored. I talked her into letting me do something fun with her style! After I rinsed the color out I put some Soy Renewal by Big and Sexy in her hair and blow dried it with a paddle brush.

This is the spot where you usually find a picture of the products I used. I forgot to take one and now I'm too lazy to do it! Incase you are losing sleep over it, here is a list of what I used:

• One small ponytail




• a few bobbypins to tuck in stray hairs




• Big and Sexy Spray and Play hairspray

I started by teasing her hair at the crown just a little bit. Then, on the side she parts her hair, I grabbed the hair in front of her ear and created a vertical section and split it in half...

and then crossed those (like you're tying your shoes),

and pull down to tighten. Then grab another section behind that, added the hair together and repeat!

Keep going around the head, pulling from the bottom, adding the sections, and tying. When you get to the other ear, smooth the front back and put it all in a ponytail.

Here's a little trick I've mentioned but never really explained...when you put your hair in a ponytail (or secured it with a bobby pin) and you feel like you pulled too hard, grab a comb with a tail! Take the tail(I used the pick end of my round brush), insert it and GENTLY slide the comb up a little. It just gives it some fluff and smooths out your 'do a little.

I decided to leave her ponytail down so I took a small section of hair, wrapped it around the ponytail and and secured the ends with a bobby pin. I gave the hair in the ponytail a little tease so I wasn't just hanging there like a dead thing. Hairspray and your good to go!

Easy Braid? Don't mind if I do!

I'm am not the worlds greatest braider. Promise. I literally only learned to braid AFTER I was finished with cosmetology school. I was working at a full service salon and a little kid's salon, called Cookie Cutters, right after I finished school. When little girls came in to Cookie Cutter's, they ALWAYS got a style of some sort. So learning to braid was a must! I worked with some girls that were really awesome braiders and they taught me some cool tricks. Doing a wrap around braid and finishing with a messy bun (braid'n a bun) became one of our 'signature' looks people always requested. Yes, I just said all of that, referring to a shop in a strip mall filled with screaming children.

Stuff I'm using today...

So to begin, I had my roomie Kashlie blow dry her hair and sit on the floor in front of me. I teased her hair just a little at the crown and smoothed out any that you could see. Homegirl was only going to church so I didn't want her to look like Prom Barbie. I decided to start her braid on the same side that she parts her hair (i.e. the side with less hair). I started with a vertical section about a half and inch thick, put that into 3 sections and started the braid.

NOW before you pick up your next sections, I'm going to share a little trick with you... Only pick up hair from the bottom and add into that section. DO NOT add into the top section like you normally would with a french braid. I'll tell you why... Unless you are AMAZING at braiding(which, I am not), the top part of the hair will look messy AND your braid will be an 'innie' braid instead of an 'outtie' braid. Which is what I want. Also, it is tre tre easier to do than adding to the top and bottom.

Back to the braid! Just keep adding into the bottom and then doing the braiding. If you are standing. move with the braid to keep the angle right. I just had Kash turn her head a little as we went along because we were too lazy to stand up.

When you get to the point you want to do the bun, stop braiding (obviously) and put the hair in a pony tail as gently as possible. If you pull too hard you will have a mess( and I kinda did, but i fixed it with the tail of a comb and covered the rest with my bun!)....

SO, you could just leave this, ala 80's style, or do a messy bun. I wanted it to look a little fancier so I did this loopy bun I like the looks of. First, take a section like this...
Tie is in a knot(yes, I said knot). It will look like this...




Stick a bobby pin in it...









Push it into your hair...











Just keep repeating that all around, spacing them out until they hide the ponytail and look pretty! So easy, huh?! When you are done with that, I just gave it some hairspray and you're done!




One more tip, If you want this to look more grown up, keep the bun behind the ear or lower. If its for a little girl, do it wherever you want!

• Smooth out the section you are putting into the braid or it will be a hot mess



• When you get to the point you want to start the bun but your hair is so thick/ heavy your afraid the ponytail will fall out, put it into 2 ponytails (or 3!). Just use your loops to cover it up!



• Once again, SDH(aka, second day hair. Don't be too impressed by me right now) works best!
